Wedding of the Century is a short film funded by SBS and Film Victoria that follows the story of Amar, a 28-year-old Muslim woman with an intellectual disability. Amar is secretly planning the wedding of her dreams amidst her parents’ struggle with unwanted community prejudice, discrimination and marginalisation.
The film highlights ways in which society isolates and excludes people with disabilities. At the heart of the story are themes of respect and inclusion, embracing the very idea that we all have value.
FATIMA MAWAS - DIRECTOR
A fresh and daring young Australian filmmaker born and raised in Sydney’s Western suburb of Lakemba. Fatima’s films take on the themes of identity, racism, war, sexuality, religion and spirituality. Having graduated from both the Victorian College of the Arts and the Australian Film Television and Radio School, she has written and directed a number of short films and music videos which have screened locally and internationally. Fatima was selected for Screen Australia’s Developing the Developers 2017 program. She wants to tell challenging, entertaining and thought-provoking stories reflective of true Australian culture featuring Muslim protagonists.
ADE DJAJAMIHARDJA - PRODUCER
Ade’s career began at ABCTV on iconic Australian programs such as Countdown Revolution, THE BIG GIG and THE LATE SHOW. Ade held several senior positions overseas including CEO of Ten on Ten Pictures and Enfiniti Productions, Malaysia. He co-produced the biggest historical epic film in Malaysia’s history PUTERI GUNUNG LEDANG (A LEGENDARY LOVE),the first Malaysian film to have been shortlisted in consideration for Oscar nomination. He was one of the producers of SALAM CAFÉ (SBS 2008), the first ever Muslim entertainment program screened prime time in a Western country. In 2011, Ade joined the not-for-profit board of Disability Media Australia, just three days prior to a massive stroke.
After this forced six year hiatus, Ade is now “re-emerging” and finding his place as a screen media professional who lives with a major disability. In 2017 he graduated the Master of Screen Arts & Business at AFTRS. Ade was a recipient of Screen Australia’s initiative ‘Developing the Developer. He is the creator of SIT DOWN COMEDY, a disability advocacy comedy program currently in development. As an Asian Australian from a Muslim family, and as a stroke survivor living with a disability, Ade contributes a rich and unique perspective on inclusive storytelling.
LEANNE TONKES - PRODUCER
Leanne Tonkes is a producer of feature films, web series, television commercials, live performances and events, music videos and short films. She's an advocate for Gender Equality in the entertainment industry and champions the careers of female writers, directors and storytellers across all media.
Leanne’s credits include feature film MY MISTRESS, AFI award winning short DOG WITH ELECTRIC COLLAR and web series THIS IS DESMONDO RAY! – an award winning 6 part web series created by Tropfest and AFI award winning filmmaker Steve Baker which recently won 50 major prizes at web festivals around the world including the Web Series World Cup. Leanne also produced Steve Baker’s recent Tropfest finalist I'M STILL HERE.
Leanne produced THE SECOND, Mairi Cameron’s debut feature, financed with Screen Queensland, Screen Australia and Australian streaming service STAN - the first Stan Original feature film released theatrically and on STAN in 2018.
Leanne is on the board of the Melbourne Women in Film Festival.
LEONA HAMEED - ASSOCIATE PRODUCER
Leona Hameed is a senior producer on ABC RN Drive, a national nightly news and current affairs radio program. She also produces It’s Not A Race, ABC RN’s podcast about race, identity and culture. She’s previously produced politics podcast The Party Room, stories for All The Best and the Meanjin podcast, written for The Lifted Brow and presented on ‘Hidden Voices of Podcasting’ at the Emerging Writers Festival.
KATE STEPHENS - ASSOCIATE PRODUCER
Together with Ade Djajamihardja, Kate Stephens founded A2K Media in 2007, where she performed various roles in the making of several successful film and TV productions for both national and international markets including the Australian episodes of SUN TZU – WAR ON BUSINESS, an international co-production for BBC Worldwide, Chanel News Asia Singapore and CMMN China and KAMBING JANTAN (The Male Goat) – the Indonesian feature film based on the nation’s most popular blog which was Co-produced by Ade Djajamihardja and facilitated by A2K Media’s production arm.
Kate is currently the Associate Producer of SIT DOWN COMEDY and WEDDING OF THE CENTURY. Kate was also instrumental in the success of A2K Media’s events, the AUSTRALIAN MALAYSIAN FILM FESTIVAL and the INDONESIAN FILM EDUCATION ROADSHOW. Being in a cross-cultural marriage to a disabled person, Kate is passionate about harmonious and progressive race relations and disability rights, and is an advocate for inclusion. She believes that on screen representation is key to a more inclusive, loving and caring society. Kate is also a speaker and presenter/MC.
